Such data provide important imformation on the level of economic activity at each post office during this period. In addition, there is an alphabetical list of all postmasters, assistant postmasters, and, later, "officers in charge" along with the post offices they served and the years they held their positions. This list contains over 425 names of prominent Putnam County citizens, making the volume of interest to genealogists as well as postal historians. A final section describes typical postal routes by which mail was distributed in the county from the 1830s to the 1940s. Portions of several historical postal route maps of the county are shown in color.
